AWE — Alternatives With Education
History
Alternatives with Education (AWE) was initiated in 2004 by Elaine AuBuchon, SSND, in response to the need for education for prisoners. Her previous work as a coordinator of prison volunteers surfaced the need for year-long quality programs that help prisoners address the reasons for their incarceration and acquire skills to close the revolving doors of prison for themselves and their children. State and local budget cuts made such programs prohibitive. When asked, prison officials as well as prisoners said their greatest need was education. AWE responded with courses that address the following goals: reducing violence; empowering prisoners to develop their potential and become connected, contributing members to society; and reducing recidivism. Staff and volunteers-—all experienced, certified teachers—teach these courses. Prisoners assist as teachers, tutors, and co-facilitators.

"It’s hard for me to forgive myself for being the kind of mother I was. It’s no excuse, but I was doing what was done to me. I couldn’t change what I wasn’t aware of. Now I know what needs to be different and I have help. Thank you!"
