"I’ve had a hard life, and I’ve made life hard for my children. It was nobody’s fault but my own. I regret that more than I can say, but I’m finally becoming the mother my kids always wanted. I’m working, I can support myself, and I can even help my kids when they’re in need. Thank you for helping me to get on my feet." Kathy

AWE — Alternatives With Education

History

Alternatives with Education (AWE) was initiated in 2004 by Elaine AuBuchon, SSND, in response to the need for education for prisoners. Her previous work as a coordinator of prison volunteers surfaced the need for year-long quality programs that help prisoners address the reasons for their incarceration and acquire skills to close the revolving doors of prison for themselves and their children. State and local budget cuts made such programs prohibitive.  When asked, prison officials as well as prisoners said their greatest need was education.  AWE responded with courses that address the following goals:  reducing violence; empowering prisoners to develop their potential and become connected, contributing members to society; and reducing recidivism. Staff and volunteers-—all experienced, certified teachers—teach these courses.  Prisoners assist as teachers, tutors, and co-facilitators.Sr. Barb Schlatter with GED student
